The result is a moving, intriguing, funny, at times heartbreaking book - unashamedly populist in the spirit of "Forgotten Voices" or indeed Margaret Forster's "Diary of an Ordinary Woman". In "Our Hidden Lives", Simon Garfield has skilfully woven a tapestry of diary entries in the rarely discussed but pivotal period of 1945 to 1948. Today, the diaries are stored at the University of Sussex, where remarkably most remain unread. An estimated one million pages eventually found their way to the archive - and it soon became clear this was more than anyone could digest. ![]() The idea was simple: ordinary people would record, in diary form, the events of their everyday lives. In 1936, anthropologist Tom Harrison, poet and journalist Charles Madge and documentary filmmaker Humphrey Jennings set up the Mass Observation Project. ![]()

I went from only persevering with it because I had paid for it to being reluctant to put it down. It held my interest right to the end and was so good that I felt compelled to listen to it again from the beginning and WOW! what a difference. It wasn't until two hours from the end that I really got into the story and discovered that it was really rather exciting. This however proved to be anything but an advantage, as it was so easy to become distracted from the detail of the story and I often found myself zoning in and out of the narrative and wondering who these characters were. I tried listening to it whilst on the go, which after all should be a major advantage of this format. I initially found this book to be the embodiment of tedium. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments The Shattered Horn by Erin Hunter![]() ![]() ![]() Survivors has garnered positive reviews, with critics praising the pacing, characters, and "magical" style of writing.
